Rol Blunk

It was in the final few weeks of working as a young graphic designer at Terence Conran’s design group in Covent Garden, that I spotted an invite to produce an ad campaign promoting the ‘Design Council’s annual Poster Awards’. Without much time spent dwelling on ideas, I came up with a one word solution for the campaign: ‘Posterity’, but split and hyphenated into two parts. Pleasantly surprised, the ‘Council’ liked the simplicity and directness of my concept, and not only commissioned me to carry out the campaign, but they asked me the next year to follow it up!

This happy break, opened the door for me to approach and be offered projects from just about every client I had only dreamt of working for. Commissions came not only from the remaining Councils: ‘Crafts Council’, ‘British Council’ and the ‘Arts Council’, but a whole list of celebrity clients: the ‘Royal Shakespeare Company’; the ‘BBC’; the ‘British Tourist Authority’ (now ‘Visit Britain’); Her Majesty’s Stationary Office’ (now ‘His’); the ‘Institute of Contemporary Arts’; the ‘National Portrait Gallery’; the ’V&A Museum’; ‘Manchester City Art Gallery’, as well as some benevolent organisations such as ’Action Aid’. Perhaps my favourite brief came from the BBC’s ‘Radio Times’ weekly magazine, which at the time had a weekly print run of 4 million copies. The BBC briefed me to produce a cover design, featuring a documentary series investigating the American legal system (can be viewed on my ‘Linkedin’).

On the social side, I trained and qualified to become a ‘Snowsport England’ level 4 ski coach. This qualified me to guide in the Alps for several weeks each winter, for more than 12 seasons. This heightened my teaching skills, well they all got down! More recently in later life, photography has become my fresh challenge, as well as a passion and so ‘Shoot Imagery’ has emerged, along with being invited to become a Getty Images photographer.
